Donald Trump on Tuesday asked a New York state judge to dismiss the criminal case in which he was convicted in May of 34 felony counts involving hush money paid to a porn star in light of his victory in the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election. In urging Justice Juan Merchan in Manhattan to vacate the guilty verdict and toss the charges, Trump’s lawyers said having Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case hang over him after he takes office on Jan. 20 would impede his ability to govern. “Local elected officials such as D.A. Bragg have no valid basis to…
NATO members agreed at a meeting with Ukraine’s foreign minister on Tuesday evening that providing air defence systems to protect the country’s infrastructure against Russian attacks has to be a priority, alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte said. “There was a clear agreement around the table last night that to help Ukraine, particularly with its infrastructure, has to be a priority,” Rutte told reporters on Wednesday. “I’m confident that allies will follow up in the coming days and weeks in making sure that whatever they can supply to Ukraine will be supplied.”
Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek ruled the tennis courts in 2024, capturing major titles and solidifying their status as world-class athletes. However, their remarkable seasons ended under a shadow as doping allegations rocked their reputations and sent shockwaves through the tennis world. Both players faced fierce backlash after minor reprimands for doping violations. Critics accused tennis authorities of double standards, alleging preferential treatment for the then-world No. 1’s. The controversy ignited debates on fairness and integrity within the sport’s anti-doping system. Sinner, who tested positive in March for trace amounts of clostebol, maintained his innocence, citing unintentional contamination. An independent…

Russian drones struck critical infrastructure in Ukraine’s western Ternopil and Rivne regions overnight, the Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday. The attack left part of the city of Ternopil without electricity, its mayor said, a week after Moscow’s strikes cut power to much of the city and its surrounding region. “Energy workers and rescuers are eliminating the consequences of the attack. Stock up on water, charge your phones,” mayor Serhiy Nadal said on his Telegram messaging channel. Ternopil lies about 220 km (135 miles) east of NATO-member Poland. Russia mounted two big attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in November, triggering…

The head of Ternopil’s regional defence headquarters, Serhiy Nadal, said a drone struck an energy facility, leaving part of the city without power. Rivne Governor Oleksandr Koval said emergency services were working on site and reported no casualties.
Ukraine on Tuesday blasted an agreement struck 30 years ago under which it relinquished nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances that never materialised, as it makes a concerted push for an invitation to join the NATO alliance. Kyiv is desperately calling for robust security guarantees to protect it from renewed Russian aggression as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House raises fears of a rapidly-struck settlement to the war that would leave it exposed. Ukraine’s foreign ministry pointed to the 1994 Budapest Memorandum which saw Kyiv give up the world’s third largest nuclear arsenal in return for…
