A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude on the Richter scale shook Japan’s Koshima region on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey. The earthquake struck at an intermediate depth of 70.6 kilometers (43.8 miles) beneath the epicenter at 9:16 p.m. local time (1216GMT), with no tsunami warning issued, according to the agency. Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat on Monday will embark on a two-day visit to Iraq, seeking to boost economic cooperation. Maritime traffic in the Istanbul Strait was temporarily suspended in both directions Sunday after a 114-meter (374-foot) tanker faced rudder failure. The vessel, the Nazan, faced the issue while en route from Russia to Kocaeli near Istanbul on Sunday evening, the Turkish Coastal Safety Directorate posted on X. Muazzez İlmiye Çığ, an internationally acclaimed Turkish scholar on ancient Sumeria, died on Sunday at the age of 110. Çığ, born in 1914, passed away in intensive care at a hospital in Mezitli in Mersin, southern Türkiye. She was known for her research in Sumerology and her contributions to the field of ancient Near Eastern studies. Türkiye has denied Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s request to use its airspace for his flight to attend the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital. Russian forces have captured the villages of Makarivka and Leninskoye in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, the Kremlin claimed on Saturday.
